California Cross Roads
Improvement works at California Crossroads are now complete, and we are thrilled with the refreshing transformation of this key junction.
Overview
This project was part of the Strategic Development Location (SDL) assessment, which sought to transform the area by improving both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. The design not only upgrades the highway and surrounding frontages but also creates a more welcoming space for residents and visitors, adhering to the Department for Transport's Manual for Streets design guidance.

The project presented numerous challenges, including navigating a labyrinth of uncharted utility services, as well as contending with the wettest start to the year on record.

Where there were once mini roundabouts, the main section of the junction now features a vibrant display of brightly coloured leaves. The pedestrian crossings are also clearly marked with a striking large white leaf pattern, complemented by smaller coloured leaves on the approaches.

To improve pedestrian safety and encourage slower vehicle speeds, raised tables have been added on all four arms leading up to the junction. These crossings help pedestrians cross safely before reaching the main junction and act as traffic-calming measures. There are also additional crossings as you approach each arms of the junction.

Phase One
As part of the improvement works, installing a new drainage system was a key priority to help reduce ongoing flooding issues in the area.

During excavation, we encountered a significant number of uncharted electrical, gas, and water pipes that were not indicated on any plans provided by the utility companies. To ensure the safety of our team and to protect these vital services, we undertook extensive hand digging in many areas rather than using machinery.

The new drainage system has now been carefully adjusted to accommodate these unexpected services. While challenges like these are not uncommon and were anticipated, we remain committed to maintaining progress and delivering high-quality outcomes despite these obstacles.

Phase Two
Phase 2 of the California Crossroad project built upon the success and structure of the initial phase, with many of the core tasks mirroring what had already been completed. This phase involved the installation of additional drainage systems to improve long-term surface water management, as well as the construction of new footways to enhance pedestrian access and safety. We also undertook the re-alignment of the remaining half of the roundabout, ensuring continuity and consistency with the work already completed in Phase 1.

What made Phase 2 particularly significant was the strategic decision to deliver the project in two phases. This approach proved highly beneficial, as it allowed us to keep a substantial portion of the junction open to traffic throughout the works. By doing so, we avoided the need for a full closure of the crossroads, which would have caused major disruption to the local network and affected the surrounding community. The phased method enabled smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion, especially during peak hours.

Another key challenge during this phase was working directly in front of a busy parade of shops. Maintaining access and minimising disruption to local businesses was a top priority. We worked closely with shop owners and delivery drivers daily to coordinate logistics and ensure their operations could continue as normally as possible. Regular communication and flexibility were essential in managing deliveries, adjusting site boundaries, and addressing any concerns that arose in real-time. This collaborative approach helped to maintain positive relationships with the local community and supported the businesses in continuing to trade effectively throughout the construction period.

Phase Three
Phase 3 of the California Crossroad project focused on transforming the public realm directly in front of the parade of shops, delivering a much-needed upgrade to both functionality and aesthetics. This phase involved the complete reconstruction and reconfiguration of the existing car park to align with the new council-approved layout. The redesign not only improved traffic flow and parking efficiency but also enhanced accessibility and the overall appearance of the area.
As part of the improvements, we installed brand-new tree pits to introduce greenery and support urban biodiversity, alongside newly marked parking bays that better reflect current usage demands. Significant drainage upgrades were carried out, including the installation of both new traditional drainage systems and channel drainage to ensure the area remains resilient during heavy rainfall. Public realm enhancements played a key role in this phase. We installed new street furniture including benches and bins, creating a more welcoming environment for pedestrians and shoppers. The entire surface of the area was replaced, giving it a clean and modern finish that tied in with the wider improvements across the site.
Accessibility was also addressed in a meaningful way. A new ramp system was installed outside the Co-op to replace the outdated and unsuitable structure, ensuring the entrance was compliant with accessibility standards and more accommodating for disabled users and those with mobility challenges. To minimise disruption, we carried out the resurfacing of the entire crossroads at night. This allowed us to complete the work safely and efficiently while reducing the impact on daytime traffic and local businesses.
The final stage of Phase 3 was the installation of the vibrant and imaginative new lining layout. This gave the entire area a distinctive, eye-catching finish and helped to define the space in a way that was both functional and visually engaging, contributing to the overall transformation of California Crossroad into a more modern, accessible, and community-friendly environment.
